The first letter expresses Stoddart's pleasure at Wynyard's selection for the touring party. 'I was very please to hear that the War Office had given you leave and that you accept the invitation to join the team. I feel certain you will enjoy the tour immensely and I shall be glad to do all in my power to make things happy for you'. Nicely signed A.E. Stoddart. 'I cannot tell you how sincerely sorry I am to get the news of the War Office cancelling your leave. I was really looking forward with the greatest pleasure to having you with us and can only tell you that I am almost as disappointed as you are. About the inconvenience caused, please don't let this add to your troubles. I can easily get another man, I had intended to take 14 but I think that if Briggs takes your place that will be enough. I only wanted another good bowler to add to the 13 which appeared in the papers to look a rare(?) side. As my object in accepting your invitation with you was only with the view of helping you re the tour, and I am very much busy, I will ask you to excuse me. I shall hope to see you somehow before we leave and in the meantime can only express how sincerely sorry I am, you cannot join us'. Again, very nicely signed in ink by Stoddart. Heavy criticism was levelled at him prior to the voyage on September 17th, three weeks after the final letter, the first being that 13 players were not enough and the second that the bowling was weak! The tour was beset by problems including illness, family bereavement, play cancelled on the first day at Sydney, barracking by the Australian crowds and the problem of 'throwing'
