John Barton King. Philadelphia. U.S.A. 1893-1912. Handwritten two page letter from Barton King to a S. Beresford Fowler recalling playing against Edgar Mayne of Australia. ' I remember , so well bowling to Edgar Mayne and looking for his weak spot which I failed to find. I hope you will remember me to him'. Letter on 'J. Barton King, Philadelphia' headed paper but undated. Second page trimmed to end of handwriting. Adhesive marks to verso. Rare

Barton King died in October 1965 and was regarded as the greatest ever American cricketer. He toured England with the Philadelphian team in 1897, 1903 and 1908. He took 87 wickets at 11.01 on the 1908 tour

Sir Francis Eden Lacey. Hampshire 1880-1897 and Secretary of M.C.C. 1898-1926. Typewritten letter from Lacey to D.J. Knight (Surrey & England) advising him that the M.C.C. Committee has asked him to accept a gift of a cricket bat in recognition of his innings of 124 runs against the Players. The letter on Lord's headed paper and dated 30th July 1919. Nicely signed in ink by Lacey. G

William Gilbert Grace. Gloucestershire & England. 1865-1908. Handwritten two page letter on London County Cricket Club letterhead dated 1st March 1900 to 'Budden'. Letter regards Budden going abroad 'I am sorry to lose your valuable services for next season. I will put you down on the abroad list'. Nicely signed by Grace. The second page of the letter has a piece cut out of it, not affecting text, and has been laid down to card otherwise in good condition

Yeomans of Leeds regarding the format of a Dinner in Leeds and Huddersfield where Fender was to speak. The letter, dated 15th September 1953, on 'Herbert Fender & Co' headed paper and signed nicely in ink by Fender. VG

Charles B. Fry. Sussex and England 1894-1921. Handwritten two page letter from Fry to a Mr Moore regarding a speech to be made at The Buccaneers Dinner on the 6th January 1948. 'Moreover "Cricket" is a large and elusive subject- AND, by the way, its usefulto know who is going to "respond" because he may be a swill and in need of sustenance in order to avoid being a heavy roller'. The letter dated 8th December 1947 on Naval School, Hamble, Hampshire headed paper and nicely signed by Fry. G

Pelham. F. Warner. Middlesex & England. Handwritten note from Warner in ink stating he knew C.J.B. Marriott. 'He was at Tonbridge and Clare, Cambridge. Captain- Cambridge Univ XV. Played for England at Rugger and Captained England. Strong as a Bull!, Brave as a Lion!'. Signed in ink by Warner and dated 3rd September 1915. Note laid down to card. G

Grace thanks him for sending a copy of the 'Bowlers Handbook' and promises to send, in return, a copy of 'The Bowlers Annual' which he is helping to compile. Nicely signed in ink by by Grace. Good condition

Letter refers to not being able to make an appointment due to sitting as a Recorder to try appeals in Oxford. The letter dated 18th April 1902 and nicely signed in ink by Lyttelton. G

Sir Frank Mortimer Maglinne Worrell. Barbados, Jamaica & the West Indies 1941-1964. Handwritten four page air mail letter from Worrell to Reg Lockett of Norton C.C. who Worrell played for during the 1950/60's. Good cricket content 'If the Norton Boys can get the runs , Jim Laker can get the opposing sides out......I really miss the general atmosphere of League Cricket very much although I realise that there comes a time in everymans life when he has got to bow out from sport in order to carve a niche for his future...'. The letter dated 10th June 1960 and nicely signed in ink 'Frank'. Odd staining to letter otherwise in good condition

Some cricket content 'I spoke to Tom last night about next year and I think he would like me to come back to Norton but I fear it is going to be difficult as I have many business commitments in London....'. The letter dated 18th October 1960 and nicely signed in ink by Laker. G

'I am afraid that much cricket, as it is played today, send me to sleep. The first match I saw was between N.S.W. and Victoria in Sydney, about 65 years ago and Trumper and Duff opened.... I have played with some great players, but for me, there has never been a batsman like Trumper'. Signed in ink by Wilkinson. VG

Herbert Sutcliffe. Yorkshire & England 1919-1945. Excellent one page typewritten letter from Sutcliffe to the Editor of the Cambridge Independent press regarding clothing shortages following the war 'forcing many enthusiastic young cricketers to turn out in unconventional rig'. He talks of village green cricket needing help and hopes to appeal through the press column for 'lovers of the cricket match to give every possible support to their local clubs.... So we shall weather the storm of austerity until happier days are with us again'. The letter dated 9th July 1946 and very nicely signed in ink by Sutcliffe. VG

Sir Charles Aubrey Smith. Two page typewritten agreement between Smith (Manager) and Roland Pertwee (Dramatist) regarding the production of a play. Signed by Aubrey Smith and Pertwee and dated 8th May 1924. G

Aubrey Smith played for England and Sussex and captained them in 1887 and 1888. He also captained the Shaw & Shrewsbury team to Australia in 1887/88. He gained fame in the 1930/40's as an actor based in Hollywood and appeared in numerous films. He died in 1948.

Edgar Richard Mayne. South Australia, Victoria & Australia 1906-1926. One page handwritten letter to 'Mr Higgins' thanking him for sending 'postcards and the photograph of Miss Marie Corelli (English novelist) and sending to him in return a menu card and signed photograph of the team. The letter, on Hotel Cecil headed paper, dated 15th August 1921(?) and nicely signed in black ink by Mayne and inscribed 'Australian XI'. G

Don Bradman. Australian tour of England 1948. Original handwritten one page letter from Don Bradman at the Piccadilly Hotel London, to Mr Wells thanking him for his letter of congratulations on the teams success and responding to a request for a message from Bradman for a proposed brochure. Nicely signed in ink by Bradman. The letter is dated 15th August 1948. The previous day to this letter being written, Bradman was playing for Australia against England at the Oval in his last Test match making a duck, bowled Hollies. VG

Original handwritten one page letter from Don Bradman to Jack Pollard regarding payment for an article for 'Six and Out' a book edited by Pollard. bradmanrequests some form of payment and asks for a cheque to be sent made out to 'Adelaide Crippled Childrens Association' as he does not wish to profit from the article. Nicely signed in ink by Bradman. The letter is dated 17th June 1966 and is written on Bradman headed paper. VG

G.O. Allen. Middlesex & England 1921-1950. Two page handwritten letter from Allen regarding his opinion of the Body-line documentary. 'Some of it was very good but frankly I thought it could have been better if the editing had been done more wisely. For instance, having watched it... was body-line good for cricket or bad?, were many batsmen hurt?, was it their fault or the line of attack?. So much was left unanswered'.
