George Herbert Hirst. Yorkshire & England 1891-1929. A fascinating scrapbook compiled by Hirst comprising press cuttings from the Yorkshire Observer and six large original mono press photographs all relating to the fourth Ashes Test, England v Australia, 20th-24th July 1934, each photograph loose mounted to the page. Some pages and photographs with handwritten titles in ink, presumably in Hirst's own hand. The newspaper articles covering each of the four days' play have all been written by Miss Mona. M. Greenwood, captain of the Yorkshire Women's Cricket XI and who was coached by Hirst who was clearly an admirer of her abilities as a tactician, leader and 'opening-wicket batswoman'. Accompanying the album are an official press pass and luncheon and tea ticket issued to Greenwood for the Test match, making her the first woman ever to be permitted access to the press box at Headingley. To the verso of the press pass Greenwood has written in ink, 'This was at Headingley- and I was asked by the Yorks. Observer to report on the match. Don Bradman was playing'. The press photographs show Wyatt and Woodfull tossing for innings; the Australians taking the field at the start of play, with 'MMG' inscribed to the photograph indicating Greenwood's seating position; Oldfield failing to stump Verity who had moved out of his crease; Bradman falling over while attempting 'a terrific hit'; a view from the stand of the match in progress; and a view of the flooded pitch on the final day's play. Each photograph measures 10"x8". Previously sold by Phillips as lot 250 in the sale of 29th October 1998. Odd minor faults to the photographs, paper wrappers of the album detached, otherwise in good condition
Estimate: £100/150
